Council approves low bids to replace Walfield baseball dugouts ahead of state tournament

Steve, a Public Works staff member, told the council the city budgeted for replacement of the dugouts on Walfield and that work is intended to prepare the field to host next year’s state amateur baseball tournament.
Bill, representing the baseball association, described the planned layout and safety improvements: block dugouts (10-by-46 footprint), a five-foot cement walkway, and a four-foot safety fence along the front of each dugout to protect players from foul balls. He said the new design also relocates water fountains to inside the dugouts and adds one on the first-base side for spectator access.
Staff presented four low quotes and recommended council approval: CMC Construction Incorporated for concrete ($25,800), Beats Builders for roofing ($1,755), Valy Fence for the safety fencing and repairs ($646), and Circ Farms for removal/labor ($400). The council approved a single motion to accept those quotes. Mayor Katy and council members voiced support and asked staff to return with plumbing quotes for the water fountains.
Council members emphasized safety and budget oversight. Staff said the low bids, plus remaining plumbing costs, should keep the project under the $75,000 budgeted amount but asked to return later with the remaining quotes and a final cost tally.
Next steps: staff will obtain plumbing quotes for the three water fountains and return to council with final costs and a construction schedule.
