Exeter council gives first reading to ordinance to fast-track electric vehicle charging permits

Mayor Jacob Johnson opened a public hearing on the ordinance at 7:17 p.m. and, receiving no public comment, closed the hearing moments later. The council provided first reading of the ordinance by title only, waived further reading, and directed staff to return with the ordinance for a second reading and formal adoption. The motion passed unanimously (5-0).
Lew told the council that the ordinance text would be added to Title 15 of the Exeter Municipal Code and that the draft is being renumbered to Chapter 15.56 to align with the code structure. The ordinance, as introduced, implements the streamlined permitting process authorized by state law and is intended to reduce local permitting timelines for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
The ordinance remains at first reading; it is not adopted and will return to the council at a subsequent meeting for second reading and final action. No public testimony was received during the hearing.
