Carmel board approves area variances for Clark Place restaurant expansion

The Town of Carmel Board of Appeals voted to grant area variances that will allow the owner-operator of Saber Restaurant at 18 Clark Place to enlarge and renovate the restaurant, enclose the outdoor patio for year-round dining and reconfigure interior space.
Architect Benjamin John and applicant Joe Mani described plans to expand dining capacity to roughly 90 seats, flip the bar layout and enclose the patio with glass to create indoor-outdoor seating through the year. The application requested variances for minimum lot area, minimum rear yard depth, parking-space depth and a waiver of a formal loading space; the applicant told the board deliveries would arrive in small vans rather than large trucks.
Board members asked about parking compliance and access for service and waste collection. The applicant said the project will provide 33 parking spaces (the applicant noted a requirement of about 30) and discussed plans to replace or reconfigure a large rear gate that currently swings into the roadway to ensure safe dumpster-truck access.
After questions and no substantive public opposition, the board moved to grant the requested area variances.
