The Agency City Council voted Nov. 14 to allow the Agency Community Development Corporation to place an electronic sign where the Lions Park sign currently stands and to have the city cover installation, electricity and insurance costs.
Dawn Benedict told the council that ACDC received a grant from the Wapello County Foundation and will cover the remaining purchase cost; she asked permission to place the sign and requested the city pay electricity and insurance and support installation. Benedict said Linder Electric volunteered time to assist with installation and that cement and electrical supplies were estimated at $1,200.
Councilmember Jacoby Deshler moved to permit the sign placement and for the city to be responsible for installation, insurance and electricity; the motion passed unanimously on a roll call vote. Council members asked whether prior contact with the sign vendor had been maintained; Clerk Angel Schafer confirmed the city had a longstanding relationship with Stewart Signs.
The council did not adopt an ordinance or fee schedule for sign advertising during the meeting; Benedict said businesses and residents could pay fees to advertise on the sign and that revenue could help offset electricity costs. The council directed no additional conditions in this meeting.
The approval allows ACDC to proceed with placement subject to the usual installation and insurance arrangements between the city and the sign owner.
