Mayor Steve Patterson read a proclamation recognizing June 27 and 28, 2026 as Amateur Radio Operators Appreciation Day in Athens, citing amateur radio operators’ role in emergency communications and preparedness at local and broader levels.
"Amateur radio operators play a vital role in emergency communications preparedness plans for the United States and the state of Ohio and other local governments and certainly for the city of Athens, Ohio," Patterson read, noting Ohio has more than 30,000 licensed amateur radio operators and that local demonstrations have taken place at the Red Cross building. He invited the public to observe field‑day demonstrations at the Red Cross building, which the mayor said would operate and demonstrate at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
This item was presented as a mayoral proclamation rather than an ordinance or council action; no formal vote was recorded in the update.
