Gilmer council approves event closures, contracts, audit engagement and cancels drought plan; several items pass 7-0

The City of Gilmer Council on Nov. 12 approved a slate of routine administrative and community items, including event street closures, contracts and meeting schedule changes, largely by unanimous votes.
On motions that passed 7-0, the council approved the consent agenda (including minutes and department reports), authorized the closure of Davis Street Alley for the Candy Cane Lane Yulefest event and approved a Davis Street closure for the Christmas Boutique Crawl for Saturday, Dec. 14 after clarifying the event date. The council also approved early office closings for Thanksgiving (Nov. 27) and Christmas (Dec. 23) and voted to cancel the Nov. 26 and Dec. 24 council meetings.
The council authorized the City Manager to execute an electrical services contract with Hill Electric Company for 2024–2025 and approved an engagement letter with Brooks Watson & Co. to perform the city’s annual audit. Mayor Tim Marshall noted the audit budget line had been set at $30,000 and that choosing Brooks Watson & Co. would increase the cost by $2,850.
Other actions included approving city water service outside the city limits at 2007 S. Montgomery St. and canceling the City's Drought Contingency Plan. The council also adopted Resolution No. R24-007, a Covered Applications and Prohibited Technology Policy, while discussing whether an additional policy should discourage nonwork social media use on city equipment.
