Gilmer council questions 4.52% sanitation rate increase, pauses action to review contract

Mayor Tim Marshall told the City of Gilmer Council on Nov. 12 that Sanitation Solutions requested a 4.52% increase in monthly charges and that the company attributed the change to the most recent CPI data.
Councilmember Jarom Tefteller questioned the size of the increase, saying the most recent CPI figures the council had available were closer to 2 percent. City Manager Greg Hutson said he had spoken with Josh Bray at Sanitation Solutions, who told him labor-rate increases were also driving the requested adjustment.
After the exchange, the council agreed to pass on taking action on Ordinance No. 24-041 amending monthly sanitation charges rather than approve it at that meeting. No vote to adopt the ordinance was taken.
The council directed staff to review the sanitation contract and the basis for the requested increase and to return with clarification before further council action. That follow-up will determine whether the ordinance is brought back for consideration.
