New Bern commission approves annual Historic Preservation Awards program

The New Bern Historic Preservation Commission voted to implement a citywide Historic Preservation Awards program and to begin accepting nominations under the program in 2026.
Commissioner Weekley presented a two‑page draft describing the purpose, eligibility and nomination process. Under the program rules approved by the commission, eligible projects are those that enhance a historic property within a New Bern historic district, may be residential or nonresidential, must have been completed within the past two years and must have complied with any required permits and certificates of appropriateness. Nominations may be submitted by any member of the public but not by HPC members.
Commissioners said the awards could recognize whole-building projects or specific elements such as landscaping, sidewalks or storefront work. The commission discussed logistics—nomination forms with photos and project details, publicizing winners and holding an annual awards presentation in the fall—and agreed the program should allow multiple awards each year rather than a single prize.
A motion to implement the program as distributed was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
