Former mayor and resident presents historical plaque to Fairfield

At the start of the June 22 meeting Muriel Shore, a resident of 6 Windsor Court and a three-term former mayor, presented the township with a plaque listing council members and mayors dating to 1942. Shore said she spent nearly two years contacting the New Jersey Division of Elections, the Essex County Clerk's Office and the Fairfield Clerk's Office, consulting newspapers, obituaries and longtime residents to compile verified records where available.
Shore told the council she found earlier records were often not computerized and sometimes stored in archives or vaults, and that in several cases information was incomplete or conflicting. She said the plaque is a start and that she will continue the work to learn more about the town's leaders so they are "not just a name only." The mayor and council thanked Shore and invited her to place the plaque in town hall.
