State board updates: Indiana Learns tutoring grants, Education Excellence Awards, and reopened comment on accountability model

The chair reminded listeners that the Indiana Learns tutoring grant window is open through Friday, Dec. 19, and that eligible families can access up to $1,000 for tutoring in English language arts and math. The chair said more than 25,000 students have enrolled and roughly 280,000 hours of tutoring have been provided under the program.
The chair also recapped the fourth annual Education Excellence Awards gala, describing it as a black-tie event attended by about 550 educators and guests; nearly $270,000 was awarded to schools and educators, and 13 educators received $1,500 each in recognition of their work in areas such as technology and professional growth.
On rulemaking, the chair said the board opened a third round of public comment on its proposed future accountability model through Jan. 5 after identifying a technical issue that needed to be included in the public comment period. The chair emphasized the importance of following required processes to complete any rule correctly.
There were no public comments at this meeting. The board approved the consent agenda by voice vote and then adjourned.
