The Indiana State Board of Education on Dec. 10 said it joined Lilly Endowment to announce nearly $75 million in public-private investment aimed at statewide education priorities, the board chair said.
The chair told the board that about $40 million of the announced package comes from Lilly Endowment and that the funds will support initiatives including literacy cadres, outcomes-based contracts for middle school programs, an expansion of the Indiana summer learning lab, and a STEM landscape analysis connecting K–12 and higher education.
“Our public-private investment of nearly $75 million, including $40 million from Lilly Endowment, will help fund literacy, STEM and summer learning work across the state,” the chair said.
The chair described this as an example of “braiding public and private dollars” and said the board has already begun receiving proposals and ideas on how to allocate the funds. She said philanthropic awards are typically awarded through specific grant competitions that target clearly defined outcomes.
Board members did not debate or vote on a spending plan during this meeting; the chair’s remarks were an announcement of the investment and a description of priority areas. The board’s next steps were not specified during the meeting.
