Dr. Christopher opened his remarks by asking the room to observe a moment of silence for a longtime coach and teacher, Joe Carroll, and for Pierce student Jacob Weisman, both of whom died this week. He told the board the district saw "almost a thousand seniors" cross the graduation stage this spring and said district teams are now focused on summer planning, maintenance and training to prepare schools for the coming year. He also noted visible progress on construction work at Hillsdale and recognized the district communications team for three national awards.
The superintendent then led the meeting in a public tribute to board secretary Linda Cherashore, who will retire in July after many years of service. "Anyone who knows Linda knows that she has a love for making things fun, memorable, and always a little extra," Dr. Christopher said, and invited the room to applaud Cherashore for her "dedication, professionalism, institutional knowledge, and unwavering commitment." The board and meeting attendees responded with sustained applause.
Three registered public commenters also used the public-comment period to praise Cherashore. Dr. Sarah Missit said, "Linda, your presence will be deeply missed, but your legacy will continue in the lives you've touched," and Beth Hayes recalled Cherashore as "equal parts policy expert, everyone's go-to person, and trusted right hand," describing both her institutional skill and sense of humor. Judy DeFonzo added personal thanks for Cherashore—s responsiveness and assistance over many years.
Why it matters: Cherashore's departure represents a personnel and institutional change for the district office; the superintendent—s report also signals that major facilities and operational work is underway over the summer and that the district plans to continue investments in curriculum and communications.
The board closed the meeting by announcing a revised meeting date for July (moved from July 27 to July 20 at 7:00 p.m.) and adjourning.
