Gadsden seeks $872,160 LWCF grant for Scorpions Sports Complex at San Luis Middle School

District staff presented details of a Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant application for a sports complex at San Luis Middle School during the May 12 board meeting.
Linda Padilla and Lucia Nava described the March 2026 application asking Arizona State Parks to approve $872,160 in LWCF funds. The grant is a 50/50 match with the district providing a matching $872,160, for an estimated Phase I cost of $1,744,320. Padilla said project planning began in October 2023 and that the district expects approximately 10 months to complete Phase I if funding is awarded. She also noted the project will be available for community use after school hours.
Padilla and Nava told the board the project packet will be presented to the City of San Luis at its May 27, 2026 meeting as part of the local coordination requirements for state-administered LWCF grants. Final grant approval through Arizona State Parks is anticipated in September 2026.
Board members thanked staff for the multi-year effort required to pull funding and demographic data together for the application.
