Dubois County adopts 35 mph speed limit on County Road 490 West

County Engineer Levi Leffert presented Ordinance 2025-13 to the Dubois County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 20, 2025, recommending a reduction of the maximum speed on county-maintained portions of County Road 490 West from 45 mph to 35 mph. The board voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance.
Leffert told the board he conducted an engineering and traffic investigation and recommended 35 mph to align the county-maintained segments with expectations for safety and anticipated development near the City of Jasper. The City of Jasper had requested a reduction to 25 mph for areas within and adjacent to its limits, but Leffert and the county recommended 35 mph to maintain consistent speeds across the county-controlled segments.
The ordinance amends Schedule II of Title VII, Chapter 72 of the Dubois County Code and specifies the affected portion of County Road 490 West (from Stewart Road to County Road 150 North) will be restricted to a maximum speed of 35 miles per hour. The text of Ordinance 2025-13 notes the change follows review of the County Highway Engineer’s traffic study and provides that violations are punishable under applicable Indiana law. The motion to approve Ordinance 2025-13 was made, seconded and carried unanimously.
The ordinance takes effect after passage and completion of any other legal requirements. The board’s action follows ongoing paving and roadwork updates provided earlier in the meeting, including other county paving projects and planned bridge work.
