City approves downtown mural at 309 Lake Street, selects Idaho artist

McCall — The City Council on June 18 approved a commission agreement to install a downtown mural at 309 Lake Street and authorized the mayor to sign the agreement and memo of agreement with the property owner.
Delta James, economic development planner, said the selection committee reviewed 11 Idaho artists and unanimously recommended Matt Sunderman. The Public Art Advisory Committee also unanimously recommended the artist. The mural theme will center on McCall conservation topics — lake quality, wildlife and local history — and the artist will provide at least three design proposals for community input before a final selection.
The project sits in the Downtown West Urban Renewal Area; the redevelopment agency is partnering on funding and is expected to cover half the cost. The chosen wall faces the McCall Real Estate parking area, across from the Chevron and adjacent to the Payette Land Trust office.
Councilmember Giles moved and the council voted unanimously to approve the artwork commission agreement and the property-owner memo of agreement with Big Lake Properties LLC. Staff will return with design proposals and a community engagement schedule.
