Dubois County pledges $421,000 over three years to pursue federal bridge railing grant

County Engineer Levi Leffert told the Dubois County Council on Oct. 27 that he will apply for the federal Bridge Railing Safety Improvement grant to update guardrail treatments for about 50–60 bridges.
Leffert said the grant requires a Financial Letter of Commitment and that the county’s estimated financial pledge would be $421,000 spread over three years, to be drawn from the Cum Bridge and/or LIT-ED funds. Ryan Craig moved to approve the Financial Commitment Letter and Meredith I. Voegerl seconded; the council voted unanimously to authorize the commitment and have the Council President sign the document.
Leffert noted the county missed an earlier grant submission in 2024 because the due date changed; the approved commitment is intended to meet current program requirements and allow the county to submit a timely application.
Next steps: staff will prepare the signed commitment for submission with the grant application and will identify the precise funding schedule across county funds if the grant is awarded.
