The Boyertown Area School District board voted June 23 to approve Phase One of a three-phase 'universal playground' project at Washington Elementary aimed at expanding accessible play for life-skills students.
Administration described Phase One as including rubber play surfacing, an expanded pathway around the playground, and installation of two swings and other accessible equipment. The presentation said the life-skills program serves about 30 students, five of whom are non‑ambulatory, and stressed the goal of enabling students in general education and life-skills settings to play together.
Mrs. Dorenzo, who presented the item, said the $1,000 donation the board had acknowledged would support a communication board; she said additional grant-seeking is planned for phases two and three. Board member Mr. Panerello moved approval and Miss Connor seconded; members approved the Phase One motion by roll-call vote.
Administrators said phase two would consider added equipment and shade structures and phase three would connect the existing large play structure to the new accessible path. The board approved Phase One to proceed; additional funding sources will be sought for later phases.
