The Laurel Public School District Board approved a suite of personnel, contract and administrative actions during its meeting.
Personnel actions: The board approved rehiring HR specialist Lindsay McNeely, the hiring of several coaches and aides pending background checks, and appointed Larry Collins as high-school/middle-school band director (pending background check and Class 5 provisional licensing). Most personnel motions were approved by voice vote; one consent motion recorded an abstention by a trustee during a prior item.
HR and administrative compensation: To address workload after the HR director position was cut, trustees approved a $2,500 annual raise for two HR support staff effective July 1 to reflect added responsibilities. The superintendent explained those staff will assume higher HR and payroll tasks previously handled by the director.
Contract extensions: The board approved adding 20 work days (moving 214‑day contracts to 234 days) for the curriculum director and the student services director to cover summer programs, Title I/Title IX duties and other responsibilities; trustees discussed staff workload and the importance of monitoring well‑being as the roles expand.
Memberships and insurance: The board approved renewals for the Montana School Boards Association (MTSBA), the Montana Quality Educator Coalition (MQC) and the Montana Association co‑op; trustees also approved MSGIA (workman's‑comp) renewal applying a premium credit and accepted the MSPIP property/liability recommendation.
Why it matters: The personnel and contract changes redistribute duties and funding commitments across the district as staff cover additional operational needs. Trustees asked administration to monitor workloads and return to the board if adjustments are needed.
Follow-up: Administration will provide updated job responsibilities and monitor staff use of trade days; benefits and budget impact were discussed and will be tracked in the coming budget cycle.
