Park board representatives and staff said the focus this year is Nester Park, where the half-court basketball surface is badly cracked and largely unused. The recommended work includes removing the existing surface, installing concrete for the court, and relocating the hoop to face the tennis courts rather than the playground to reduce risk for young children. Staff said Public Works will perform demolition and much of the labor, producing an estimated savings of more than $2,000 on the project.
The recommendation also includes a two-phase shelter refacing project: phase one (approved this year) will reface exterior gable ends with aluminum soffit and fascia, install steel on vertical walls and wrap columns and beams with corrugated steel and trim; phase two (expected next year) would add a false ceiling to reduce bird roosting inside the shelter. Bathroom refacing at Nester Park will follow a model used during recent Dirks Park bathroom updates, and any remaining funds would be used for field refreshes at local parks.
