Orono schedules work session on public-works operations and approves trailer replacement

The Orono City Council voted to schedule an extra work session this spring to examine public-works operations, capital expenditures and the city’s contracts with other municipalities for fleet services. The decision follows a request from Councilmember Benson, who said she wants a clearer accounting of staff time, fleet life cycles and charges for services provided to other cities.

Staff (Laura) offered to circulate a Doodle poll to identify convenient dates and the council agreed to approve the revised work-session schedule.

Separately, council approved a capital purchase to replace a city trailer. Councilmember Ricks, who pulled that item to ensure awareness before the work session, described the ask and noted the council would review broader fleet needs in the upcoming session. Councilmember Benson questioned an optional torsion-suspension upgrade (about $1,000 on the quote) and asked about repairability and whether torsion suspension is suitable for heavy hauling. Public-works staff (Mr. Bowman) explained that torsion suspension provides a smoother ride, reduces strain on the tow vehicle and equipment, and can lengthen equipment life; he said repairability depends on the failure mode and that lifecycle expectations vary with usage.

Why it matters: councilmembers said they want a deeper operational and capital-review discussion before committing larger future purchases, including high-cost vehicles that will enter the replacement cycle in coming years.
