John Hall of the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce told the City Council on Monday that the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) intends to make Marshalltown its largest single overnight stop this year, arriving Wednesday, July 22.
“We are especially honored to be able to host them,” Hall said, and urged residents and businesses to sign up as vendors or volunteers at marshalltown.org/ragbry. He said RAGBRAI will contribute $50,000 toward local expenses and the Chamber is hoping to raise about $50,000 more through private fundraising. Hall said initial planning groups have already begun meeting and that the Chamber will serve as a fiduciary and backbone for event finances.
Hall acknowledged the size of the event—he estimated more than 20,000 riders and support vehicles through town in roughly 24 hours—and warned council and residents that planning will require permits, contracts and routine council updates. He said the Chamber will publish budgets and make funding transparent on the event page and that there will be no administrative fee collected by the Chamber.
Council members thanked Hall for the early notice and said they expect staff to return with any required permits or requests for city cooperation as planning moves forward.
