Committee hears plan to update Charlestown City web and social communications for new federal ADA rule

Committee members on May 18 were briefed on a new federal accessibility requirement that will require cities and towns with populations under 50,000 to adopt updated digital-accessibility standards by 2028.
The Chair said staff and the city's media director, Brian Smith, attended an informational webinar and will engage the city's website vendor to review current pages and recommend changes. "We want to be in compliance before we're required to be in compliance in 2028," the Chair said, adding that the committee will be asked to review content for screen-reader compatibility, readable fonts and image descriptions for social media.
The Chair said the city will reformat agendas and provide a new template to committee members so that meeting materials will work with auditory screen readers. Committee members were asked to flag clunky or hard-to-read materials and to send suggestions to Brian Smith for inclusion.
No formal action was taken on the website work during the meeting; staff were directed to coordinate with the vendor and report back to the committee.
