Several council members argued the section near French Creek Park has a distinct natural character and that paving would change the park experience. One council member said the park's gravel entry contributes to the park's rural feel and cautioned against using "it's free" as the sole reason to pave. Another member emphasized maintenance and safety benefits, noting gravel roads require more frequent repairs and complicate winter operations.
After extended discussion weighing aesthetics, erosion control and emergency access, council members agreed to visit the site before making a final decision; staff will delay directing Metropolitan Council on restoration until after members have inspected the area. The council did not adopt a binding vote on the restoration at the meeting.
