Orono approves Metropolitan Council reimbursement for Fox Street detours

The Orono City Council approved an agreement with the Metropolitan Council to reimburse the city for the use of Fox Street during detours for a Metropolitan Council project.
City staff explained the agreement is a reimbursement strategy for city road usage during the Met Council project. The city attorney and staff told council that the Met Council has agreed to provide funds to reimburse Orono for detour use; staff member Edwards said the figure was "80 something thousand dollars" in the meeting record. Council discussed mitigation related to French Creek Park, including whether the project’s restoration would include paving currently gravel park access; staff said the Met Council’s design includes restoration and that the council could direct the Met Council not to pave if it chose.
Council Member Benson said she wanted the paving question separated from the reimbursement approval and requested further council consideration before any paving occurs on park property. Council voted to approve the reimbursement agreement and authorized the mayor to execute the agreement as presented.
The motion carried by voice vote; staff will follow up on final design details with the Met Council and return to council if paving of park property is proposed.
