The Independence City Council approved two commercial restoration and rehabilitation grant applications with Wapsie Realty to help repair and restore downtown building façades.
The first grant covers work at 119 1st Street East (the Ninnie Franks building). The total repair cost was listed at $27,158 and the city will provide one-third of that cost, or $9,043.61, toward grinding, tuckpointing and masonry repairs.
The second grant covers 121 1st Street East, the adjacent building that houses the Indie Area Gymnastics Academy; the repair estimate was $21,808 and the city grant equals one-third, or $7,265.39, to cover similar façade work. Councilmembers expressed support for improving downtown appearance and both grant approvals passed on roll-call votes, 7-0.
The grants are structured as reimbursement or cost-share grants under the city’s downtown restoration program; applicants must proceed with the agreed scope of work and follow city procedures for grant administration and proof of payment before receiving funds.
