LEAPORT COUNTY — At its June 24 meeting, the Leaport County Redevelopment Commission heard a CSX site‑selection award presentation and several updates across TIFF districts, and the commission approved a motion allowing staff to offer a 14‑acre parcel in the KIP industrial park for sale to interested parties.
Bailey Timmers introduced a CSX award recognition and Adam Cast, a CSX industrial-development representative for Indiana, explained the site-selection program, describing gold, silver and bronze tiers and saying the process uses site-selector software to rank locations. Cast said the program helps local staff see how a site compares across roughly 120 sites in the platform and cited about 80 sites that have awards. The presentation included a plaque and a brief photo opportunity.
MCR Partners (via Carlton Bishop, standing in for Matt Rearen) reported updates across several TIFF districts: a new hotel has received occupancy permits in the 42194 district; a business identified in the transcript as "Miss Behaven Me" relocated primary operations to Leaport County and had a soft opening; and Red Key Engineering continues work on sewer/water connectivity that could support a potential Cobblestone Hotel in Michigan City.
Staff also reported that work on KIP development standards is ongoing, with a PI committee meeting expected in early July (the transcript references July 10) before the Plan Commission review. Commissioners heard that Nexus Biofuel's facility is now a hard-hat zone and that the company is recruiting several technical positions; staff said they are coordinating workforce support.
On a separate motion, commissioners authorized Matt Rearen to reach out to interested local vendors and others to offer the 14‑acre parcel for sale; the motion passed on a voice vote. Staff noted that bids on the appraised parcel had not been received during the public solicitation period.
In new business, staff said several businesses north of routes 39 and 20 are exploring water and sewer service; county and city economic development teams and the waterworks superintendent are exploring funding and technical options, but the county currently is not pursuing an extension that far north.
