Malone board praises highway crew, declares 30‑day emergency after storm damage

Stewart also reported on a recent Federal Emergency Management Agency meeting and praised the highway crew for continuing work after Hurricane Debby, saying the crew “has not stopped working to get the roads back to where they need to be.”
During public comment, resident Virginia Moffett asked the board to consider adding Morgan Road to this year’s budget for possible paving; Deputy Highway Superintendent John Manley said he would inspect Morgan Road and check the road’s condition.
The board approved a resolution declaring a state of emergency for the period beginning Aug. 9, 2024, for 30 days to address storm‑related damage and recovery needs. The board also authorized posting a job opening for Highway Laborer I, which Deputy Supervisor Terrence Maguire said would be advertised on social media and the town signboard.
The meeting record notes ongoing washouts in the town; Manley said some repairs will require longer work and that the highway crew will assist the Village of Malone with paving for a couple of weeks beginning the next day. No additional funding or timelines for the repairs were adopted at the meeting.
