Pelican Rapids raises swim lesson fee to $40, approves summer hires and exterior lighting replacements

The Pelican Rapids City Council at its April 14 meeting approved a package of Parks & Recreation items: a swimming-lesson fee increase, summer staff hires and lifeguard appointments, and replacement of exterior lighting at several city buildings.
Brian, presenting the Streets & Parks report, recommended raising group swim lesson fees from $25 to $40 after comparing regional rates. He said lessons are half‑hour sessions; sign-ups are scheduled for June 13 (9–11 a.m.), the first session runs June 22–July 2 (Monday–Thursday with Fridays reserved for makeups), and a second session is July 13–23. If demand warrants a third session, staff may add one. The council approved the fee increase.
Council also approved hiring returning staff and new lifeguards for summer work at the rates presented: several lifeguards at $17.85 per hour, a returning water-safety instructor at $24 per hour, and other listed hires pending certification. Brian said the city will pay for lifeguard training.
On facilities, Brian reported failing exterior LEDs at the library, public works building and fire hall; an electrician estimated $7,011.90 to replace lights on the three buildings. The council approved using the general fund to replace the fixtures for safety and security.
The actions are intended to ensure adequate summer staffing, sustain lessons for children and families, and address building security and safety ahead of anticipated grant decisions for larger bathhouse repairs.
