Council approves no‑parking designation on narrow stretch of Southeast 2½ Street

The Pelican Rapids City Council approved an amendment to Chapter 7 of the city code on April 14 that designates a no‑parking zone on the east side of Southeast 2½ Street between Trunk Highway 108 East and Southeast 1st Avenue.
City staff (Lance) presented the change as a targeted safety measure for a narrow block that sees pedestrian traffic, especially when the pool opens, and noted construction had increased informal parking in the area. Staff showed a map and recommended adding a single sentence to the ordinance language to prohibit parking on the east side of that stretch.
Council members discussed previous enforcement at nearby stop signs and expressed support; staff noted the police department already enforces the 30‑foot clearance from stop signs and expected the revision would reduce conflict and improve safety for children walking nearby. The council approved the change by voice vote.
The amendment is intended to align parking rules for that block with surrounding streets and improve safe access to sidewalks and crossings.
