Council approves variance for accessory structure at 413 Ridgecrest Drive

The Pelican Rapids City Council on March 31 approved resolution 2026-06 granting a variance for 413 Ridgecrest Drive that permits an accessory structure to sit closer than the standard 3-foot setback from the east property line.
Lance said property owner Gary Hevlin requested the variance because of site constraints including an existing tree; the Planning Commission reviewed the hardship claim and recommended approval. Lance reported the adjacent lot owner, Mike Carlson, had been contacted and indicated he was "fine with it." The council made a motion to adopt resolution 2026-06; the motion was seconded and the council carried the resolution by voice vote.
The city emphasized the structure will remain on the owner's property and will not encroach on the neighboring lot. The variance resolves a permit situation by allowing slightly reduced separation from the lot line to avoid disturbing the tree on the property.
