Council approves sale of aging Engine 2; proceeds to help fund vehicle replacement

Fire Chief Shad Hansen asked the Pelican Rapids City Council on March 10 for authorization to sell Engine 2, a 1998 city pumper the chief said is infrequently used and costly to maintain. Hansen told the council the vehicle has roughly 22,000 miles and was dispatched about twice last year.
“We're not asking to replace it,” Hansen said. “It just sits there and kind of rots away… I would be hopeful to get $20,000 out of that engine, too.” He said the department would use sale proceeds to help purchase a crew‑cab pickup to replace the city’s aging Yukon and that the department would still maintain three engines to meet ISO rating requirements.
Council moved, seconded and approved the sale by voice vote; the mayor recorded the motion as carried. Members indicated the Yukon would be sold once the replacement pickup is secured so sale proceeds can be applied to the purchase.
Next steps: staff will proceed with advertising and sale procedures and track proceeds for the fleet replacement plan. Chief Hansen said he would keep council updated on progress.
