The Suffield Parks & Recreation Commission described a new final 5K route at its June 10 meeting, aiming to keep runners on sidewalks at the turnaround and address safety concerns.
Commissioners said the planned 5K will start at the back of the school, continue to Mountain Road, High Street and North Main Street to the edge of Russell, then return along the sidewalk to the start. Staff noted that an alternative starting route on Remington Road has several blind spots and narrow shoulders, and therefore may not be used. The route plan includes a staffed water station at the turnaround. The minutes state the 5K will begin 30 minutes after the 10K.
Bill Boucher reported he has been in contact with the race organizer (referred to in the minutes as Kim) and that coordination is under way; Director Peter Leclerc said he will assist with promotion. Peter also reported that Police Chief Cannon met with staff to discuss the route and was receptive to proposed changes. No formal vote to adopt a route is recorded in the minutes; staff described the course and planned safety measures for the event.
