Melbourne to open nomination filings Aug. 16 for November municipal election

The Melbourne City Council was notified on Aug. 9 that nomination papers for the Nov. municipal election will be available Monday, Aug. 16 through Thursday, Sept. 16, with filings due at City Hall by 5 p.m. on Sept. 16, Clerk Mary Pothast said.
Open positions include one two-year council seat, two four-year council seats and the mayor’s seat. The clerk said candidate guides will be available at City Hall to assist prospective candidates with required forms and affidavits of candidacy.
Why it matters: these dates set the legal window for prospective candidates to qualify for the November ballot. Voters will have an opportunity to elect a mayor and multiple council members; candidates must meet filing requirements and deadlines to appear on the ballot.
