Melbourne approves $64,200 paving bill and weighs longer-lasting resurfacing

The City of Melbourne on July 11 approved payment of a $64,200 invoice from Inroads Paving for recent paving and adjustment of five manholes. Carrie White moved to pay the bill, Beth Smith seconded, and the motion passed with all ayes.
Clerk Mary Pothast asked for an August public hearing on a budget amendment to move funds to cover the payment. Council and Public Works discussed whether to use sealcoating (a shorter-term patch) or the more expensive option described by the contractor's representative: milling off the top layer and placing a 1½-inch overlay, which was presented as lasting 7 to 10 years. Council expressed interest in inviting an Inroads representative to a winter meeting to explain the process and costs.
Fricke asked whether reserve funds would cover a broader sealcoating plan and requested a revised quote from Manatt's for a smaller sealcoat area to better fit a $50,000 target; Manatt's had not provided a revised estimate by the meeting.
