Melbourne to apply for National Flood Insurance Program after floodplain notice

The City of Melbourne will begin the process to join the National Flood Insurance Program after the Department of Natural Resources notified the city that a small corner of Lollar Park lies within the 100-year floodplain. Clerk Mary Pothast will file the NFIP application and prepare an ordinance and resolution for the council's August meeting, Mayor Cynthia Mansager said on July 11.
Council members were told that participation in the NFIP is required to maintain eligibility for FEMA assistance in future disasters. The council scheduled a public hearing for Aug. 8 for the first reading of the floodplain ordinance and invited the public to review copies at City Hall prior to the meeting.
