Melbourne to amend city UTV ordinance after state registration change

Melbourne City Council on July 11 moved to revise the city's ordinance that addresses utility task vehicles (UTVs) and golf carts after the passage of HF 2130, which requires UTVs to be registered at the state level and removes municipal registration fees. Clerk Mary Pothast was directed to remove city registration language and circulate a tentative draft prior to the August meeting.
The Mayor set a public hearing for the council's first reading of the revised ordinance on Aug. 8. The change means the city will no longer register UTVs or impose city-level registration fees or operational restrictions tied to the removed language; any remaining local operational restrictions will be set by the forthcoming ordinance language.
The revision follows state action changing registration authority; the council did not take final action on operating rules at the July 11 meeting and will consider the ordinance language at the August hearing.
