The resources and capital planning subcommittee reported a large slate of summer projects focusing on safety, accessibility and building maintenance. Projects noted included roof replacement at Shamrock and Alta Vista, security-system upgrades and camera installation at multiple schools, LED re-lighting through utility cost-share, installation of air-source heat pumps to improve cooling and decarbonization, weatherization work, crosswalks and parking/paving improvements, and drainage mitigation at Malcolm White.
Playground work will emphasize accessibility: the Shamrock project will add poured-in-place rubber surfacing, accessible equipment and shade; the Reeves will receive a larger update with poured-in-place surfacing for half the playground and new preschool-appropriate structures to support an expanding early-childhood population and PALs program.
Extended School Year (ESY) programming will be held at Reeves and the high school due to a Shamrock roof replacement; the administration prioritized repainting parking lines, hiring crossing guards and scheduling site coordination so summer construction will not disrupt ESY. Site engineers for the Reeves and Goodyear fire-station projects performed field marking and plan on summer site work; project managers gave contact information and confirmed efforts to avoid interfering with school programming.
Committee members asked about air conditioning capacity in older buildings; estimates for a high-school gym AC retrofit are large (approximately $1.3 million) and would require long-term capital planning and electrical-system upgrades. The committee scheduled a late-August building walk-through to review summer work.
