Fire Chief Eisinger, speaking at Bayport’s Jan. 5 council meeting, summarized the department’s December activity, described recent training and inspections, and confirmed completion of a costly repair to the department’s aerial truck.
“For the month of December, our call volume was 105 compared to 107 in 2024. Our year-to-date for 2025 was 1,225 compared to 1,270 in 2024,” Eisinger said. He noted quarterly SCBA and ice-rescue drills and ongoing fire inspections and plan reviews. Eisinger told the council the department completed a repair on the aerial truck that returned the unit to service; he described the repair as significant in cost, noting that replacement would be multiple years and cost far more than the repair.
Council added the appointment of a full-time fire chief to the consent agenda. Staff said a candidate had accepted an offer contingent on pre-employment checks and evaluations, including a background check and a psychological evaluation; staff expressed optimism the candidate could begin by late January or early February if clearances are completed.
Separately, staff reported continued work on negotiating a three-year lease extension with options for years four and five for the old fire hall with the Department of Corrections; the DOC requested several improvements. Staff also is preparing an invoice to a property owner for cleanup required by a court order and said the city expects the invoice may not be paid and assessments would not be applied until next fall.
The consent agenda containing the appointment and other items was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote during the meeting.
