Alburnett council adopts $805,120 budget amendment, renews CD and approves sheriff contract

The Alburnett City Council on Dec. 12 adopted Resolution 2024-47, a budget amendment that increases spending authority by $805,120 to cover prior-year expenditures and new-hire wages; the council recorded a unanimous roll-call vote.
"This budget amendment is to add $3,520 to Public Safety, $5,000 to Public Works and $45,000 to General Government for wages and benefits increases due to new hires," the mayor said during the public hearing, adding the amendment draws the funds from city fund balance and does not change the property tax levy.
Councilors voted on several other financial and administrative items. The council approved Resolution 2024-48 to renew a certificate of deposit (original principal $50,000, current balance cited around $53,256.75) for an 11-month term contingent on a renewal rate at or above 4.35 percent. The council also authorized the Linn County Sheriff's Office contract renewal (Resolution 2024-49), agreeing to the proposed increase from $42 to $45 per hour and confirming 10 hours of coverage per week.
Council also set FY26 budget workshop dates for Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 27 at 6 p.m., and approved the city administrator's 90-day objectives tied to operational savings, online service transition and procurement and records policy updates.
Votes and formal actions recorded: the roll calls for the budget amendment, CD renewal and sheriff contract were all recorded as affirmative by Councilors Trump, Bosenberg, Suup, West and Myers. The clerk was directed to certify and file the adopted budget amendment with the county auditor.
The council concluded the meeting after final comments and adjourned at 7:45 p.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2025 at 7 p.m.
