Allamakee board adopts 2024–25 legislative priorities and approves first reading of multiple policies

The Allamakee Community School District board adopted its legislative priorities for the 2024–25 session and completed a first reading of numerous board policies at its July 15 meeting in the high school library.
On a motion by Scott Melcher, seconded by Erik Helgerson, the board set four legislative priorities for the coming year: mental health, private school choice, preschool and Area Education Agencies. The motion carried with all ayes.
Later in New Business the board approved the first reading of a wide-ranging set of board policies covering topics that include board member social media engagement, secretary and treasurer duties, employment references, abuse of students by employees, compulsory attendance and chronic absenteeism, open enrollment procedures, weapons, student promotion/retention/acceleration, basic instruction program and postsecondary counseling, student health services, school nutrition, educational specifications for buildings and sites, lease or disposal of district property, Title IX nondiscrimination and related procedures, pregnant students and records maintenance. Beth Shafer moved the first reading and Kelly Deeney seconded; the minutes record the vote as all ayes.
Both the priorities adoption and the policy first-reading motions were recorded as unanimous. No amendments or dissent were recorded in the minutes. The board adjourned at 6:06 p.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 19, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in the high school library.
