Red Oak council adopts new stop signs, asks IDOT to cut Highway 34 speed limit and discusses pedestrian crossing

The Red Oak City Council on Sept. 15 adopted Ordinance 2025-13 creating two-way stop signs at the intersections of 5th and Nuckols streets and 8th and Nuckols streets and unanimously approved a resolution asking the Iowa Department of Transportation to lower the speed limit on Highway 34 from 50 mph to 45 mph for the segment between 765 feet east of Eastern Avenue and the Nishnabotna River Bridge.
The council suspended the three-reading requirement and approved the stop-sign ordinance after procedural motions (the motion to suspend readings was moved by Councilperson Tim Fridolph and seconded by Sharon Bradley; the ordinance adoption motion was moved by Jeanice Lester and seconded by Bradley). The minutes record "Roll call, all ayes, motion carried" for the measures; the minutes do not give a numeric vote tally.
Street Superintendent Chris Baird had earlier updated the council on street department work including tree limb cleanup and crosswalk maintenance, items councilors referenced when discussing safer pedestrian access across Highway 34.
Council members also approved Resolution 2025-120 to request a reduced speed limit from the Iowa Department of Transportation for the identified stretch of Highway 34. The council discussed the possibility of adding a pedestrian crossing at some future date but did not set a timeline or formal action to install a crossing; the discussion was exploratory and tied to the earlier street maintenance report.
The council set upcoming meeting dates on Oct. 6 and Oct. 20 and adjourned at 6:43 p.m.
