Council renews student library-card interlocal with Anacortes School District

The Anacortes City Council on June 22 approved an interlocal cooperation agreement with the Anacortes School District to automatically provide library cards to district students for three years.
Library Director Jeff Fogle said the agreement continues the district’s opt-out model and makes it easier for teachers and students to access library databases because student IDs double as library card identifiers. "There are about 2,400 students in our system and... about 40 students opted out," Fogle said, summarizing recent district data provided to the library.
Under the agreement the school district will provide student data monthly so the library can load accounts using student ID numbers. The district will contribute $3,000 per year to offset program costs. Fogle told the council the program simplifies classroom visits and database access because students do not have to carry a physical library card.
Council members praised the program’s value for early literacy and multicultural collections. Council Member Clea McGrath moved to authorize the mayor to execute interlocal agreement number 26-149-LIB-00001 between the City of Anacortes and Anacortes School District No. 103; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Fogle said the arrangement is the same as the prior agreement and that staff will return with any future changes; the council adjourned after approving the interlocal.
