The Rutherford County Schools Board of Education amended and approved Policy 6.306 on June 23 to clarify when students may be removed from classrooms for violent, aggressive or severely disruptive behavior and how parents are to be notified.
Board members and staff identified unclear or awkwardly phrased provisions in the draft. The board replaced several sentences with statutory language to make the threshold for removal clearer: students may be removed when another student’s behavior ‘‘creates a safety concern or substantially interrupts classroom instruction.’’ The board also substituted statutory wording for parental notification, specifying that notifications must comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and must not disclose information that would violate federal or other relevant privacy laws.
Members discussed practical scenarios (when to evacuate versus remove a student), special-education considerations and how principals should implement the policy. The board approved the amended language and directed staff to replace the problematic draft text with the statutory subsection recommended during the discussion.
Board members said the change is intended to give principals clear, legally consistent guidance while protecting student privacy.
