The Mashpee Select Board voted June 22 to award the phase‑2 alum nutrient inactivation contract for Ashume Pond to Solitude Lake Management, following staff briefings on prior sampling, dosing analysis and permitting.
A project proponent explained that UMass Dartmouth School of Marine Science completed a dosing assessment and sediment core analyses that informed alum dosing and buffering, and that Joint Base Cape Cod will share 50% of the project cost. Town staff said prior alum treatments were completed by Solitude and that the firm submitted the lowest responsive bid; funding was identified from the Community Preservation Committee.
Board members discussed treatment timing and were told fall application, before thermal stratification, typically yields the best results and avoids wasting the treatment’s effectiveness. The board approved the contract award unanimously and directed staff to coordinate permitting, scheduling and joint‑base cost‑share arrangements.
Town staff said ongoing sewering plans and additional extraction wells at the base aim to address legacy phosphorus sources and reduce the need for future alum treatments.
