Piedmont council approves $596,909.40 in bills, two resolutions and personnel moves

Terry Kiser moved and Richard Williams seconded approval of the previous meeting minutes; the motion carried with Council member John Lawrence recorded as abstaining. Richard Williams moved—and David Ivey seconded—approval of the bills, which the council adopted. The council then approved Resolution 2024-09 on a motion by Greg South, seconded by Terry Kiser, and Resolution 2024-10 on a motion by David Ivey, seconded by Terry Kiser.
The council also approved a personnel transfer in the street department after Tim Frost requested that a vacant street-department position be filled. Council member Greg South moved to transfer Mike Hughes from WGS into the street department and to allow Byrian Watts to fill the WGS vacancy; Jubal Feazell seconded and the motion carried.
Clerk Hinton reported that painting at the Civic Center will begin August 5 and asked the council to line up a gym-floor contractor once painting is complete. Richard Williams moved to notify Smith Flooring to schedule the gym floor work when painting finishes; David Ivey seconded and the motion carried.
At the bid opening for the CLT and city streets, Clerk Hinton said Vulcan was the low bidder at $925,084 for repaving of the Trail and $189,328 for repaving of city streets in each district. Hinton also said the putting green near the driving range is nearly finished and raised the procedure for interviewing candidates for the city’s new fire chief.
Visitor Terry Batey thanked the mayor and council for support of the Independence Day celebration, calling it "a huge success for Piedmont." With no other business, the council adjourned at 6:54 p.m.
What happens next: The council directed staff to proceed with the approved transfers and to coordinate the Civic Center contractor scheduling; additional steps on the fire chief hiring process were not specified at the meeting.
