Buckeye Union Board approves Mandarin and middle‑school ELA curricula, updates charter MOU and adopts wildfire safety amendment

The Buckeye Union School District Board of Trustees approved multiple curriculum adoptions, an updated charter memorandum of understanding and a wildfire emergency amendment to a campus safety plan during its June 10 meeting.
The Board unanimously approved adoption of Level Learning as the district’s TK–8 Mandarin Language Arts curriculum for the Buckeye Union Mandarin Immersion program after Superintendent David Roth summarized the evaluation process and instructional alignment. Board Member Jon Yoffie moved the item and Brenda Hanson‑Smith seconded; the motion carried 4‑0.
The Board also approved new middle‑school English language arts selections: MyPerspectives for Rolling Hills Middle School and Common Lit 360 for the district’s two International Baccalaureate middle schools, Camerado Springs and Valley View. Superintendent Roth described the curriculum review, pilot opportunities and alignment with state standards. Brenda Hanson‑Smith moved approval; Scott Masten seconded and the motion carried 4‑0.
Assistant Superintendent Jackie McHaney presented an updated Memorandum of Understanding between the district (as the authorizing local educational agency) and Rising Sun Montessori to reflect current charter dates, operational practices and changes in special education service arrangements for the charter term July 1, 2025–June 30, 2030. The Board approved the MOU by a 4‑0 vote after a brief discussion about ensuring the document reflected current law and practice.
The Board voted unanimously to amend the district’s 2025 Comprehensive School Safety Plan for the Buckeye Elementary campus to include a wildfire emergency component required by Assembly Bill 2968. Ms. McHaney said Buckeye Elementary is the district’s only site located within a designated high fire hazard severity zone and that the district coordinated with the neighboring California Montessori Project on mutual aid and transportation support. The amendment will be implemented effective July 1, 2026.
