The Board of Selectmen on June 25 held a first read of proposed changes to the Town of Greenwich flag policy and approved a separate request to raise the 1776 colonial American flag on Sept. 17.
Selectwoman (proposer) summarized proposed clarifications to the 2024 policy: a town resident, together with written support from five other town residents, may submit a request to the First Selectman's office at least 30 days before the requested date; after timely review and endorsement by the First Selectman or any other Selectperson, the request would be presented at two regularly scheduled Board meetings for consideration and vote. The proposal also includes a clause that military or veteran-related flag requests be proposed or conducted by American Legion Connecticut Post 29 (or a designated successor or other veteran organization) at the First Selectman's discretion.
The flag-policy changes were presented as a first read for later board consideration and public input. Separately, the board voted to approve raising the 1776 colonial flag on Sept. 17, 2026, in support of U.S. Constitution Day; the request was noted as being made on behalf of the Sons of the American Revolution and was treated as non-urgent given its September date.
The board indicated it will solicit public feedback before taking a final vote on the policy revisions at a future meeting.
