Piedmont City Council approves $527,627.53 in bills, hires staff and funds crime task force

The City Council of the City of Piedmont on Aug. 20 approved $527,627.53 in bills, adopted four resolutions and approved personnel moves and a $5,000 payment to the Calhoun/Cleburne Drug & Violent Crime Task Force.
Council action came during a regularly scheduled meeting presided over by Mayor Baker. The council approved the minutes, authorized payment of the bills presented, and adopted Resolutions 2024-11, 2024-12, 2024-13 and 2024-14; each measure was approved after a motion and second and recorded as "carried." The council also approved the task force request of $5,000 for FY2024.
The meeting included two personnel decisions. Terry Kiser moved and Jubal Feazell seconded approval to hire a third person in the city utility office; council members discussed that the hire fills a vacancy created by an employee’s absence and that, if the prior employee returns, the newly filled slot would be applied to any open position. Council Member Caleb Pope moved and Greg South seconded approval to hire a part-time library employee for 24 hours per week.
Clerk Hinton told the council a contract has been signed for a café at Fagan’s Park and that construction work has begun. He said the city received notice from Waste Management that disposal rates will increase next month and that AMEA will add a small fuel surcharge. He also reported the gym floor and painting work should be finished in the gym area by Friday.
In council reports, Jubal Feazell provided paperwork proposing changes for current commercial driver’s license (CDL) drivers. David Ivey thanked the Electrical Department for their work during recent storm-related power outages; Terry Kiser echoed that appreciation. Mayor Baker asked council members to submit additional streets for paving in each district within the next few weeks and reminded members that Piedmont’s football team will play at Centre on Friday.
With no visitor comments and no further business, Greg South moved to adjourn; Terry Kiser seconded and the meeting adjourned at 6:36 p.m.
