Piedmont council approves bills, airport sponsorship, truck purchases, hires two staff and finalizes café terms

The council approved payment of bills totaling $814,936.69 after a motion from Council Member Caleb Pope and a second from Richard Williams.
The council authorized a $10,000 FY2023–2024 sponsorship payment to the Centre–Piedmont–Cherokee County Regional Airport. Greg South moved the sponsorship; Terry Kiser seconded. The motion carried with Council Member Caleb Pope recorded as voting no.
For equipment, the council approved purchasing one Chevrolet 2500 Custom 4x4 diesel crew cab for $58,986.00 and two Chevrolet 2500 Custom 4x4 gas crew cab trucks at $49,834.20 each from Buster Miles Chevrolet; Greg South moved the purchase and Terry Kiser seconded. The minutes state funding will come from AMEA.
On personnel, Clerk Hinton asked whether Byrian Watts could replace the position held by Steven Hilburn and to fill a second vacancy; Greg South moved to hire for the two positions, Jubal Feazell seconded, and the motion carried.
Mayor Baker said the last trailer was removed from the old Head Start property; the city will declare that parcel surplus and obtain a fair‑market value. He said a lease for a café at Fagan’s Park would be finalized by Friday with Courtney and Heather Hood as tenants at $500 per month. Greg South moved that the city‑owned equipment used by the café be maintained by the tenant; Jubal Feazell seconded and the motion passed.
The meeting ended after a motion by Caleb Pope and a second by Terry Kiser to adjourn; the council adjourned at 6:33 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 20.
