"These novel selections . . . were carefully selected to support and extend the themes, essential questions, and learning goals found within My Perspectives," Broman said.
Broman also outlined the parent alternative-text process: novels are listed on syllabi, parents will receive notification five to eight instructional days before a unit begins, and parents may request an alternative text that meets the same instructional standards and learning objectives. She said audio versions are available for students with IEPs but must be accessed through headphones so audible audio does not interfere with other students' work.
A board member praised the transparency of the preview process and encouraged more parents to review materials during public previews. The board approved the recommendations by voice vote.
What happens next: schools will publish syllabi and notification timelines, teachers will implement pacing guides, and the district will provide guidance to parents seeking alternative texts or accommodations.
